PARIS (AP) — Wave after wave of Ireland’s green jerseys threw themselves at the New Zealand line with the clock ticking down and a Rugby World Cup semifinal at stake.Ireland probed left, right, tried pushing through the middle. Every attack was repelled until, finally, Ireland’s 37th phase ended and, with it, Irish hopes of a first semifinal were extinguished by a black blanket. For all of its attacking, try-scoring might, New Zealand showed how to grind it out the hard way.The All Blacks withstood three comebacks from top-ranked Ireland and two yellow cards to win their gripping quarterfinal 28-24 on Saturday and stay on course for a record fourth title.“What an incredible finish to a test match, 37 phases. That’s probably the longest period I’ve heard of or witnessed,” New Zealand captain Sam Cane said. “It’s pretty clear that the defense won us the match tonight. Teams who win the World Cup do so with great defenses. That has to be our benchmark going forward.”Th...Iowa tight end Erick All, Wisconsin quarterback Tanner Mordecai leave with injuries in first half

As Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki eyes potential reelection in Poland on Sunday and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remains firmly in power in Italy, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party is considering joining forces with the two ECR heavyweights. Touting their potential to win 15 additional seats in the European Parliament after the EU election next June (for a potential total of 81 seats, up from the current 66), senior officials from the ECR said they are looking to wield hard influence over European policy. The ECR is currently fifth among the seven political groups there, while POLITICO’s Poll of polls projects it attaining one spot higher, overtaking the Greens for fourth and within five seats of Renew Europe.“We are most certainly looking at top jobs in EU institutions. A key figure in those selections is leaving the organization.Brad Ciolek, Baltimore’s director of draft operations, is joining the Washington Nationals as their senior director of amateur scouting, a source with direct knowledge of the agreement confirmed. Ciolek has been with the Orioles for more than a decade and has overseen their past five drafts — each of those under executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias.A rare holdover from the previous front office, Ciolek served as Baltimore’s interim scouting director for the 2019 draft, in which the Orioles had the No. 1 overall pick. They used it on catcher Adley Rutschman and took infielder Gunnar Henderson with their second-round selection. Those two players ranked first and second among Orioles in FanGraphs’ version of wins above replacement as the club won 101 games and the American League East this season.The...Latest news
