Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrived Wednesday night in Ireland for a brief visit to his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, on the western Atlantic coast.Fewer than a dozen fans greeted him as his motorcade arrived in the village. The smattering of U.S. flags and MAGA hats among people standing by the roadside were greatly outnumbered by Secret Service and Irish police.Trump did, however, receive a typically warm welcome inside the resort, the largest employer in the village with a staff of 300, including a performance by traditional Irish dancers. He traveled to Ireland with his second son, Eric. Reporters at the hotel asked Trump what he thought of Joe Biden’s four-day visit last month to Ireland, when tens of thousands cheered the current U.S. president at walkabouts and rallies. “I didn’t see too much of his visit. I don’t know what he did here,” Trump said.Trump, a vocal backer of Brexit, was also asked for his take on arguments over post-Brexit trade rules in Northern...In The News for May 4 : Tentative deal reached between CRA, union, ending strike

VANCOUVER — Climate change is knocking some Pacific salmon out of alignment with the growth of the ocean plankton they eat to survive, new research says.In the largest data set ever gathered on the timing of juvenile salmon migration, research found the changing climate is causing some salmonpopulations to migrate earlier out of step with plankton blooms that are also affected by changing weather patterns. Lead author Sam Wilson said that as climate change continues the two will match less and less, putting salmon survival at risk.“The coastal ocean is changing in one way and Pacific salmon are changing in a myriad of other ways and those ways don’t always align,” said Wilson, a post-doctoral researcher in the salmon watersheds lab at Simon Fraser University. Numerous species of Pacific salmon are at risk or even endangered for several reasons, including overharvesting and lack of habitat protections. Wilson suggests the response by the young salmon may be a coping...Queen Elizabeth toonie most popular coin some sellers have seen

TORONTO — Colin Cutler has been going to coin shows since he was 14 but has never come across a coin as popular as the black-ringed toonie the Royal Canadian Mint released to memorialize the late Queen Elizabeth.“I have never seen a coin with this kind of demand in the 52 years I’ve been doing this,” said the Chatham, Ont. man, who runs Collectors Corner Coins.“There’s never been a coin that’s had this kind of response.”The two-dollar coin with a black band of nickel-plated steel features the late monarch’s effigy in the centre of one side and the usual polar bear on an ice floe on the other. It’s marked 2022, the year of the queen’s death. The mint produced about five million of the toonies, amounting to about one for every eight Canadians.“So if you had one, seven of your friends couldn’t,” Cutler said. When the coin was due to be released in December, he contacted the mint and was told there were none l...Daily horoscope for May 4, 2023

Valentin Yudashkin, a Russian fashion designer known not only for flamboyant evening gowns but also for redesigning Russia's military uniforms, has died at the age of 59, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday (2 May).Yudashkin, whose often theatrical designs are exhibited in museums in France and the United States, first made his mark by dressing Raisa Gorbacheva, the wife of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, in the late 1980s.In the 1990s, after the break-up of the Soviet Union, he became a Russian icon, styling national Olympic and soccer teams before, in 2008, redesigning 85 parade uniforms for all the branches of Russia's armed forces, together with Igor Chapurin."The most difficult thing was to make sure the uniforms, like any other uniform, were functional," he said in an interview. "I spent a lot of time talking to people who are serving in the army now to understand what works for them, what doesn't, what's comfortable and what isn't."Yudashkin said he had been influenced...Miss Manners: I’m bitter about my co-worker’s slacking, and I think I’m going to snub her

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I recently had an issue with my co-worker/friend. She was given her assignment at 7 a.m., and I reminded her about it two more times. At the end of her shift, she told me she had been too busy to complete her assignment. She definitely was not too busy to perform her tasks that day, which was confirmed by another worker in her department. I now see I should have followed up more closely, but I didn’t feel I needed to micromanage her. I am still a little bitter about her lack of ownership.I will soon be having a holiday get-together at my home. This co-worker/friend has attended in the past, and another friend is pushing me to invite her again this year.
