WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Toti Gomes’ goal sealed a 1-0 win for relegation-threatened Wolverhampton against Aston Villa in the English Premier League on Saturday.Victory in the Midlands derby moved Wolverhampton 10 points above the drop zone, while also delivering a blow to Villa’s hopes of qualifying for Europe Gomes’ first goal for the club secured a fourth straight home win and saw the team recover impressively from being routed 6-0 by Brighton last week. The winner came in the ninth minute when Goimes crashed a header off the bar from Ruben Neves’ corner. It would now take an unlikely set of results to send Wolverhampton down, with the club 13th in the standings. Villa was eighth, a point behind Brighton, having played three games more.Villa’s best chance of finding a leveller came with 19 minutes remaining when Douglas Luiz’s free kick dropped for Tyrone Mings six yards out, only for the defender to volley over.___More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub...

Man City and Haaland avoid scare ahead of Real Madrid clash

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City and Erling Haaland got a wake up call they didn’t know they needed before their Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. The Norwegian goal machine has hardly put a foot wrong this season. But against Leeds on Saturday he allowed himself a moment of indulgence which almost backfired on the defending English Premier League champions.Cruising with a 2-0 lead at Etihad Stadium, Haaland passed up the chance to score a late penalty by handing over the duty to Ilkay Gundogan, who was on for a hat trick. Gundogan hit the post and Leeds scored a minute later to set up an uncomfortable finish in a match that City totally dominated.City won 2-1, but against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, such a lapse in judgement could prove much more costly.A miffed Pep Guardiola made sure City took the lesson on board.“Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he has to take it,” the manager said. “If Gundo scores ever...

Brian Daboll couldn’t really answer on Saturday whether he intends to lighten Saquon Barkley’s workload this season with a two-back rotation. He doesn’t know if Barkley will be on the field come training camp as his contract standoff with the team drags on.“Well, depends on what we have out here come August,” Daboll said before the second practice of rookie minicamp. “Getting around, seeing what we’ve got in terms of players’ loads and how much – it’s a completely different team. We’ll see how it goes once we get out here and compete with pads in training camp and preseason games.”Rookie Eric Gray’s selection in the fifth round of April’s NFL Draft out of Oklahoma does add an interesting element to Daboll’s and Joe Schoen’s roster construction for this fall, though. The running back depth chart now includes vets Barkley, Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell, Gray and second-year pro Jashaun Cor...

Some also point to the campaign’s poor execution, including a promotional video that features a winery in Slovenia instead of Italy.IRS offering better picture on looming debt ‘X-date’The funding Congress approved last year to shape up the beleaguered IRS has helped the agency catch up on processing new and backlogged tax returns and to allow the agency to provide a more precise picture of when the Treasury could run out of money — the so-called X-date.
